Succulent shrimp and sweet, tender crab simmered in a bold Jamaican curry sauce—this dish is coastal comfort at its finest. Infused with fresh thyme, escallion, garlic, and a touch of fiery Scotch bonnet pepper, it’s rich, flavourful and perfect for soaking up with white rice, festival, Excelsior water crackers or warm hard dough bread.
Historically, communities along Jamaica’s coastline, especially in parishes like Portland, St. Thomas, and St. Elizabeth, made use of the abundant seafood around them. As Indian curry spices became part of Jamaican cuisine in the 19th century, locals began experimenting—combining these spices with their daily catch. Over time, curried crab and shrimp became a favourite, especially during holidays, seafood festivals, or when land meats were less accessible.
Also, curried crab is often associated with community gatherings or beach cookouts where fresh seafood is in abundance and slow-cooked outdoors, giving the dish a smoky depth that’s hard to replicate in a kitchen.
Little-known fact: The crab traditionally used is the Jamaican blue land crab, especially prized during the rainy season when they’re freshly caught. Many locals still “clean” the crabs for days using coconut husk and herbs—a tradition that brings out the sweetest flavor in the meat.
When I first migrated to Canada, cooking wasn't really my thing. But the longing for the rich flavors of home—and the reality of feeding a household of six—pushed me to learn how to make quick, easy Jamaican meals with just a few simple ingredients. Over time, cooking became more than a necessity—it became a joy.
Like a true Jamaican, my favorite part of cooking is sharing meals and seeing the happiness they bring to others. Even better? Inviting others into my kitchen—especially those who believed Jamaican food was too hard to make—and showing them how easy and fun it can be.
Now, I want to share that same experience with you and your loved ones, right in the comfort of your own home. Let's bring the joy of authentic Jamaican cooking to your kitchen, one simple, delicious meal at a time.
