Jamaican Yellow Yam

Yellow yam is a beloved root vegetable grown in the lush hillsides and farmlands of Jamaica, especially in parishes like Trelawny and St. Ann. With its firm texture and slightly sweet, earthy flavor, yellow yam has long been a symbol of strength and endurance—often called “the food of champions.”

Its deep cultural roots trace back to West Africa, where yams were a dietary staple. Brought to the Caribbean during the transatlantic slave trade, yellow yam quickly became a key part of Jamaican cuisine and identity.

In Jamaica, yellow yam is typically boiled and served as a hearty side, especially for breakfast or lunch. It commonly appears alongside Jamaican steamed fish, callaloo, ackee and saltfish, or run down (fish cooked in coconut milk). It’s also a favorite among athletes for its dense, energy-boosting properties—legend has it that Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt fueled many of his early training days on yellow yam from his hometown of Sherwood Content.

A true taste of the island’s soul—simple, satisfying, and full of history.
